Tube Tied

I love my wife. Valentines Day is more than just a day for cards and candy for us. It serves as the anniversary of the day we met 19 years ago. Because of that I wanted to get her something really special this year. The idea of a vasectomy wasn’t a total surprise. We had talked about it since our son was born. We started having kids late so after the last pregnancy we were 39 and when I calculate my age as the children age the math doesn’t seem to go in my favor. I have a lot of work to do to be able to out ski, bike, or smart the kids for the majority of their childhood. Before they allow...

Managing Expectations

I am not normally one for New Years Resolutions, but I have decided to make one for 2012. My resolution: To manage my expectations. As someone who loves outdoor activities, I am looking forward to doing the things I love with my kids. Sometimes I find it hard to wait for the kids to be able to participate. Though, in all honesty, my impatience could be due, in part, to my desire to ski something besides the bunny slope at Purgatory. Low and behold . . . So, 2 weeks in to last season I pulled a groin muscle. I took a couple of weeks off but, ultimately was able to play out the rest of the season. At least until I broke my ribs. All I had to do was ice my groin after every skating session. I was determined to avoid the groin pull this year. I started hard, playing 2 nights in a row, but I stretched before hand and I thought I was in...

What Is Courage?

What Is Courage?

As an adrenaline junkie who likes to think he sticks his neck out a little bit farther than others, though not as far as some, I have often put myself in scary positions. To a certain extent I have thrived on them and searched them out. Does it take courage to face up to the potential of crazy decisions? I suppose, but over the recent years I have become more attuned to the bravery of day-to-day life that often are not acknowledged. A recent death in my family highlighted that bravery for me and the profound impacts that those acts can have on communities. In September my Uncle Ed died. I...

New Changes

Since my change in stature from managing campaigns and projects to chauffering children and answering non-stop demands I have had weeks where I feel that the skies the limit and weeks where I feel like my road was cut short and it pisses me off. I love my children and I do think that I have been given an amazing opportunity to spend time with them. At the same time  I feel worried about my career, keeping up with my skills and knowledge, and am tired of reading books that only have one word per page. We are fortunate. My wife can work and cover our expenses. We are keeping up with our bills....
